Why Yasmin and Yaz birth control pills are under FDA investigation
Early in 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asked the makers of Yaz and Yasmin, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, to change misleading Yaz television commercials. Bayer aggressively promoted the birth control pills as cures or treatments for symptoms relating to menstruation, including PM (premenstrual syndrome), acne and muscle aches. Officials from 27 states joined the FDA in filing complaints against Bayer. The FDA warned Bayer that the commercials understated the risk associated with Yaz and Yasmin and promoted unapproved usage of the pills.
Yasmin and Yaz are only approved for 3 medical usages:
- Pregnancy prevention
- Treatment of PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder)
- Treatment of moderate acne
Yaz is the top-selling birth control pill in the U.S. Between Yaz and Yasmin, they account for 25% of the birth control pills administered in the United States and dominate the birth control market.
Although Bayer agreed to run a massive advertising campaign to correct the misrepresentations of their previous ads, Yasmin and Yaz are the subject of at least 32 federal lawsuits. These cases assert that Bayer failed to warn of the increased risk of injury associated with the use of their birth control pills and that Bayer overstated and overpromoted benefits to increase sales of the pill. In one of the lawsuits filed against Bayer, it is alleged that 50 deaths occurred between 2004 and 2008 which can be directly associated with the use of Yaz.
